To celebrate its 10th anniversary, the most isolated hotel in the world has undergone a five-star revamp. The White Desert Hotel in Antarctica, host to the likes of Prince Harry and Bear Grylls, offers incredible views, top-of-the-range accommodations and opportunities such as kite skiing, visiting researchers at the South Pole and exploring the insides of blue ice caves. Guests to the hotel stay in “sleeping pods” – six heated fibreglass domes with bamboo headboards, Saarinen chairs, fur throws and ensuite bathrooms stocked with Lost Explorer-brand amenities. With a touch of dramatic flourish, each suite stands alone on a strip of land between a frozen lake and walls of ice. The season for travel to inner Antarctica is short – only running from November to December – so to book one of the two White Dessert trips on offer (eight-night and 11-night), guests have to book early. Cost is the same for both: $72,000 per person, all inclusive.
