The Concert Hall of Sydney Opera House was a sight to be seen on Monday 28 August when the
Royal Thai Government presented the Khon Epic Masked Performance in celebration of the 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand.
Her Majesty is one of the greatest patrons of Thai arts and crafts, and is particularly honoured for her role in the preservation and promotion of Khon. This high performance art brings together a raft of uniquely Thai skills, including silk brocade used in the costumes, the making of the elaborate masks and head dresses, and the dazzling accessories and jewellery.
Guests were able to appreciate the incredible detail and artistry required to put on a Khon performance through an exhibition that showcased Her Majesty’s passion in the foyer of the Concert Hall prior to seeing the epic played out on stage. The dance drama told a story from the Ramakien, the Thai version of the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana.
2017 also marks the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Australia. The Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand, General Tanasak Patimapragorn, was among the distinguished guests in attendance, adding to the atmosphere of celebration.
