Sally De Souza, Group PR Manager of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, jetted in to Sydney this week from Hong Kong to update the travel industry about its latest developments. Among the most exciting news for Australians was June’s announcement of Mandarin Oriental, Melbourne, set to open its doors in 2023.

Ms De Souza invited select media to attend an exclusive lunch at Sydney’s Jade Temple. Over Neil Perry’s take on classic Cantonese cuisine, guests learned more about the anticipated opening of the 196-room property (plus 148 Mandarin Oriental-managed Residences at Mandarin Oriental) on Collins Street. The group spent a decade looking for the perfect opportunity to bring its celebrated hospitality and design (the 185-metre tower is the work of the late Dame Zaha Hadid) to Australia.
Mandarin Oriental currently has 31 hotels in its portfolio, with a further 14 new hotels planned, seven of which were announced this year. Among the new properties will be a hotel and residences on Oahu, Hawaii (2020); a second hotel and residences in Dubai (2020); two hotels in Beijing (2018); and a city-centre hotel and serviced apartments in Doha (mid 2018). Hotel Santiago in Chile is now managed by Mandarin Oriental, with a refurbishment planned for 2018, as is the Pink Sands Club on Canouan Island in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Dining continues to be a priority for the group as well. Across its portfolio, Mandarin Oriental has a total of 18 Michelin stars across 12 restaurants, more than any other hotel group in the world.
