Nestled among the slopes of Sri Lanka’s southern province, Cape Weligama, a distinguished Relais & Châteaux property and part of the Resplendent Ceylon portfolio, will undertake an extensive refresh in celebration of its 10th anniversary. To enable these enhancements, the resort is temporarily closed, reopening on 2 December 2024 with upgraded facilities and services to cement its position as the foremost luxury beach destination in Sri Lanka.

Cape Weligama offers a diverse and enriching perspective of Sri Lanka’s landscapes. The strategic closure will allow for both cosmetic updates and a comprehensive brand refresh, focusing on creating a stronger sense of place and offering curated experiences that provide an authentic, intimate exploration into the essence of Sri Lanka. “We are delighted to celebrate Cape Weligama’s 10th anniversary in true Resplendent style,” said Malik J. Fernando, Chairman of Resplendent Ceylon. “From its origin as a sleepy fishing village, Cape Weligama has blossomed into the vibrant epicentre of the Southern Riviera known for its a vibrant beach scene, surfing, bars and restaurants, whale watching and cinnamon estates, likened to the Shoreditch area of East London by Conde Nast Traveller.”
The refresh will involve several updates designed to elevate the guest experience including the introduction of peacock-themed upholstery and an overall tropical aesthetic that reflects the vibrant local culture and natural beauty. Public spaces will also see significant enhancements, including upgrades to the bars and restaurants. In addition to these aesthetic improvements, the resort will expand its facilities for groups, providing amenities designed to seamlessly cater to gatherings and events. Families will benefit from more interconnected suites, offering spacious and comfortable accommodations that enhance the family-friendly nature of the resort. For younger guests, a new Forest School kids club will offer engaging activities, highlighting the local culture and traditions. In addition, a new beach club will be introduced, enriching the beachfront experience with additional amenities and services, ensuring Cape Weligama continues to offer unparalleled luxury and hospitality.
Cape Weligama looks forward to welcoming guests back to a rejuvenated and even more spectacular resort in December 2024.

Key features of the refresh:

  • New Beach Club – Guests will have direct access to the exclusive secluded beach, home to the new Beach Club, offering a selection of gourmet food, cocktails and stunning views of the Indian ocean. Additionally, the club offers direct access to a nearby surfing bay, making it ideal for both relaxation and adventure. This lively spot in a scenic cove is perfect for experiencing everything the southern coast as to offer.
  • Forest School Kids Club – A nature-inspired program with activities like tree climbing, sand play and gardening, designed to nurture creativity and independence. With everything from mud kitchens to butterfly gardens and storytelling, the new Kids Club is the perfect place for young adventurers to learn and explore in the vibrant natural surroundings.
  • Family Interconnected Suites – Cape Weligama will be offering more interconnected rooms, introducing 8 sets of 2-bedroom interconnected suites perfect for families with children of all ages. These accommodations combine a master suite with an interconnecting junior suite.
  • Cape Residences – The three sets of 310 square-metre Cape Residences comprise a Prestige Villa on the ground floor with a Pool Pavilion on the upper floor, connected by an internal staircase. Newly designed interiors will reflect the vibrant and local culture and stunning natural beauty with peacock-themed upholstery and tropical ambiance.
  • Enhanced Public Spaces – Upgraded bars and restaurants will create a more elegant and inviting atmosphere.
  • Expanded Group Facilities – New amenities will cater seamlessly to small gatherings and events. The Moon Room will be a versatile space designed for a variety of activities, including private dining experiences, corporate meetings, intimate celebrations, and more. It also features an adjoining garden, providing an additional outdoor setting or events.
  • Gift Shop – a gorgeous gift shop with carefully curated clothing, jewellery, teas, spices, books and accessories in partnership with Sri Lanka’s premier luxury lifestyle retailer PR, led by Annika Fernando.
  • Technology Upgrade – all rooms will receive technology upgrades including premium Ruark audio.
