The new mixed-use development on the site of the heritage-listed former Department of Lands building in Sydney, an extension of the Capella Sydney luxury hotel, has been named The Lands by Capella in a ceremony held today.
Dignitaries, stakeholders and key partners attended the event which marks a pivotal step in Singapore-based Pontiac Land Group’s transformation of the iconic site, adjacent to the hotel, into a luxury destination.
The Lands by Capella, located at the junction of Circular Quay, Macquarie and George Streets, forms part of the Sandstone Precinct, alongside Capella Sydney hotel, which opened in 2023. The precinct, developed by Pontiac Land Group, is one of the largest privately funded tourism infrastructure projects in NSW.
Slated to open in Q1 2026, the precinct will offer 10,000 square metres of luxury retail, dining, event spaces, and community-centric experiences.
NSW Minister for Jobs and Tourism Stephen Kamper celebrated the development’s importance. “The naming of the Department of Lands building marks a defining moment in the evolution of the Sandstone Precinct as a world-class destination,” he said. “The Lands by Capella is a stellar example of what can be achieved when public and private sectors work together for outcomes that respect the past while looking boldly to the future.” Other attendees included representatives from the New South Wales Government and international diplomats such as Anil Kumar Nayar, Singapore High Commissioner to Australia, who linked the event to broader diplomatic milestones. “I am delighted that the Naming Ceremony of The Lands by Capella takes place as we mark the 60th anniversary of Singapore-Australia diplomatic relations this year,” he said. “It also underscores the energy and dynamism in the ever strengthening engagement between Singapore and Sydney in New South Wales.”Meanwhile, Pontiac Land Group CEO David Tsang highlighted the project’s cultural mission. “The Lands by Capella highlights our continued commitment to creating extraordinary places where history, craft, culture, and local community are honoured,” he said. “The reawakening of Sydney’s cherished Sandstone buildings will not only welcome visitors in for the first time, but also become the common ground for travellers and locals alike to connect.” It will be the perfect complement to Capella Sydney’s luxury accommodation offering, according to its General Manager Marc von Arnim. “Luxury is not just where you stay, but how you live,” he said. “We bring the art of refined living and personalised service into every touchpoint.”
