Virgin Australia has officially reentered the long-haul international market with today’s launch of its first Sydney to Doha flight, a cornerstone of its strategic alliance with Qatar Airways, marking a “pivotal moment” for the airline and Australian travellers alike.
CEO Dave Emerson described it as the beginning of a “new era”, both for the airline and for international travel from Australia.
“Through our partnership with Qatar Airways, we’re not just launching a new route – we’re opening the world to millions of Australians, delivering more choice, better value and a seamless global experience,” he said.
The new service opens up access to over 170 global destinations via Qatar Airways’ expansive network, spanning Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. This launch also signals a new chapter in the Virgin Australia-Qatar Airways alliance, which will soon add routes from Brisbane (starting 19 June), Perth (26 June), and Melbourne in December 2025.
Qatar Airways Group CEO Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer described the occasion as a “milestone moment in the partnership between our two airlines.”
“This is the culmination of many months of meticulous planning and tireless dedication… a testament to our shared ambition to deliver increased competition, world-class service and value to Australian passengers,” he said.
The new flights will be operated under a wet leaser arrangement using Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777 aircraft, featuring its award-winning Qsuite Business Class, spacious economy cabins, and complimentary high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi for all passengers. By December 2025, the alliance aims to provide up to 2.65 million seats annually between Australia and Doha.
Beyond travel convenience, the launch is expected to deliver substantial economic benefits. According to Virgin Australia, the services will “generate more than $3 billion in economic activity within Australia over the next five years” and “create hundreds of new jobs in aviation, hospitality and tourism-related sectors.”
From 1 October, Virgin Australia’s Velocity Frequent Flyer members will also enjoy new perks on bookings of the new services, including bonus Status Credits, Points multipliers, and premium lounge access.
To celebrate, Virgin Australia is offering up to 15% off select fares to Doha and beyond for bookings made by 30 June 2025, for travel between 16 October 2025 and 31 March 2026.
