Luxury lifestyle brand 1 Hotels has officially made its debut in Australia with the opening of 1 Hotel Melbourne, a nature-inspired urban sanctuary located along 220 metres of Yarra River frontage in the city’s North Wharf precinct. Developed in partnership with Melbourne-based developer Riverlee, the hotel merges sustainability, heritage and luxury. It sets a “blueprint for a more sustainable future,” while honouring the site’s maritime past. At the heart of the project is the restored Goods Shed No. 5, a landmark dating back to 1895, now reimagined through biophilic design and thoughtful reuse of over 2,000 salvaged elements. “The opening of 1 Hotel Melbourne marks a powerful moment for our brand as we expand in the Asia Pacific region,” said Barry Sternlicht, Founder of 1 Hotels and Chairman of Starwood Hotels. “As we grow our global footprint, we’re focused on markets that reflect our values—places where nature, culture, and innovation converge in meaningful ways. Melbourne is a city that not only understands the importance of sustainability, it celebrates it.”

The property features 277 guest rooms and 36 suites, showcasing reclaimed materials like railway sleepers and subaquatic pier timbers. It also includes 114 luxury branded residences, including an 18th-floor penthouse designed by Riverlee founder Clement Lee OAM. “1 Hotel Melbourne brings sustainability and style into harmony, with a focus on wellness, local connection, and day-to-night programming that creates a tangible sense of place,” said Raul Leal, CEO of Starwood Hotels. “From the moment you arrive, you feel like you’re part of the city.”The hotel’s signature restaurant, From Here by Mike, marks the first hotel venture for acclaimed Australian chef Mike McEnearney. The venue celebrates hyper-local produce, low-waste menus, and a biodynamic wine list, housed in a moody, textural space crafted from reclaimed materials. “Through our partnership with 1 Hotels, we have reimagined this heritage waterfront site into a sustainable luxury destination that honors Melbourne’s maritime past while setting new benchmarks for environmental stewardship,” said David Lee, Development Director at Riverlee.
