Le Commandant Charcot, PONANT’s first LNG-powered hybrid electric luxury polar exploration vessel, reached the geographic North Pole at 6:38pm AEST (10:38am local time) yesterday evening.
Delivered to PONANT a few weeks ago, Le Commandant Charcot is currently undertaking a ‘dry run’ in the Far North with a number of captains, officers and scientists on board, along with expedition teams, so they are fully prepared for the unique experiences that await guests.

Captain Etienne Garcia was at the helm, with Captain Marchesseau at his side. Le Commandant Charcot is the very first French ship to reach the North Pole (90,00,000°). “I am hugely proud to have been at the helm of the very first French ship to reach the geographic North Pole, it is the ultimate achievement of a collective adventure started by PONANT many years ago. I am very grateful to the crew and all the staff on board that have contributed to making this possible” said Captain Garcia. PONANT Chairman Asia Pacific Sarina Bratton applauded the milestone on social media, saying it was “A proud PONANT moment”. The 245-passenger ultra-luxury PONANT Explorer class ship is earmarked to enter service at the end of next month (31 October 2021) on a 20-day itinerary sailing from Puerto Montt to Antarctica, priced from US$29,760 per person twin share.
