Australian high-end department store, David Jones, and luxury cruise line Regent Seven Seas Cruises showcased some of the latest cruise fashion and discussed travel trends at a special High Tea event this week in Sydney. The function coincides with the second instalment of the partnership between the two companies, initially launched in 2022 and featuring a collection of street-level window displays.

Hosted within ‘The Apartment’ at David Jones’ flagship store on Elizabeth Street, Sydney guests at the function heard from Jared Pottier and Alicia Tassone, Senior Style Consultants at DJs, and Lisa Pile, VP and GM, Asia Pacific, Regent Seven Seas Cruises.

With more than 270 million searches on Google on what to pack for a cruise, the panel discussed topics including packing techniques, clothing designs and styles, brands and some of the latest fashions.

Pile said that while Regent is a luxury cruise line, onboard there’s very little pomp and ceremony.

“Regent does love understated luxury and elegant casual,” she said.

Pile, an industry fashionista in her own right, said David Jones stocks a compelling variety of “wonderful and different brands”.

“We are very fortunate in this country to stock so many wonderful brands. Fashion these days is all about multi-purpose, multi-use designs.” She suggested styles such as suits by Carla Zampatti where the trousers could separately be paired with a blouse, or the blazer with a pair of jeans, or choosing a caftan or MooMoo design by Camilla, or even donning a ‘White Lotus-look’. “There’s so many beautiful brands at David Jones,” she reiterated. Steve Odell, Chief Sales Officer for Regent Seven Seas Cruises was asked for his take on men’s fashion, saying formalities have evolved for men in cruising. “A lot of that is about modern luxury, rather than traditional luxury. There’s no need to take a dinner jacket with Regent,” he said. The recently reappointed cruise expert said that Regent’s ships offer a variety of restaurants each night that don’t require formal attire.
“Men are well dressed, very smart, you don’t see jackets or formality you see very smart casual and that’s something that we’ve encouraged. “You don’t need to take a jacket. It’s not something that is mandated. It has become much more casual.”

As for packing, Pile highlights that many of Regent’s guests travel comfortably at the front of the plane therefore they’re permitted a generous luggage allowance with their airline.

“Even when we’re fortunate in this country to be travelling at the pointy of the plane we’re still only able to take a maximum of 40 kilograms of luggage. For me, 20 kilos is often make-up and shoes,” she quipped. Pile elects to go monochrome, with her heels offering a splash of colour. Her exercise gear goes in first. “It’s the most important because then I can eat,” she jokes. Whereas DJ’s Jared Pottier says he throws the exercise gear in first… where it’s likely to remain all holiday.
Pile also notes that while 40 kgs of luggage may sound significant when considering the average length of travel for Australian travellers, it’s not. “What people don’t realise is that Australians, prior to the pandemic, used to travel on average, five weeks. Now it’s between five and eight weeks. For eight weeks away, 40kg isn’t much.” Pile said the Mediterranean continues to be the number one destination for Australian cruisers, with Aussies exploring more than one destination on their travels. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ three window displays will run until the end of the month.
