South African Airways (SAA) is responding to increasing demand by boosting the frequency of its nonstop flights between Perth and Johannesburg. From 8 December 2024, SAA will increase the frequency of its nonstop South Africa-Australia connection to four flights per week, with a further increase to five flights per week beginning 7 January 2025. This increased uplift will provide even more opportunities for Australian travellers to experience SAA service en route to Africa. Over the past two years since the airline relaunched, South African Airways’ fleet has expanded from six to 16 aircraft, with routes increasing from six to 15. Passenger revenue also surged by 400% between August 2022 and August 2024.

SAA Interim CEO Professor John Lamola, said “We’ve reopened 11 outstations, including Mauritius, Perth, and São Paulo. Employment has grown from 500 to around 1,200 staff, with 140 pilots now on board.” Yesterday, SAA announced it would add another new route, this time to Lububashi, effective 1 November. Lububashi tje the second-largest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Perth schedule

Beginning 7 December 2024, flights will depart Johannesburg at 8:35pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays and arrive in Perth at 12:10pm the following day. An additional flight will depart Johannesburg on Mondays beginning 6 January 2025. From 8 December 2024, flights will be tweaked to depart Perth at 11:55pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays and arrive in Johannesburg at 5:10am the following day. An additional flight will depart Perth on Tuesdays beginning 7 January 2025. East coast travellers can connect to the Perth departures via seamless transfers through SAA’s codeshare partners, Virgin Australia and Qantas.
