Quark Expeditions has designed a new itinerary to offer guests a chance to see the elusive Emperor penguin colony at Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea – on the less-explored eastern side on the Antarctic Peninsula.
The 18-day Snow Hill to the Peninsula: Shackleton’s Emperors itinerary departs on 30 October 2025 and includes a charter flight from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia where guests will board state-of-the-art ship Ultramarine to begin their Antarctic Exploration.
Snow Hill Island is home to more than 4,000 breeding pairs and their fluffy chicks, with its colony of penguins first confirmed by Quark Expeditions in 2004.

Another key highlight of this expedition is the opportunity to refine photography skills under the guidance of renowned wildlife photographer Paul Goldstein. With more than three decades of experience and numerous awards, including the 2024 Black & White category in the Nature Photographer of the Year Awards, Goldstein brings an energetic and dynamic approach to his photography workshops. “Of all the expeditions I’ve led over the past 23 years, my two Emperor quests with Quark remain the most memorable,” he said. “The Weddell Sea and Snow Hill Island is the most captivating wilderness I’ve encountered.” In addition to photography, guests will explore Antarctica’s stunning landscapes, visiting Adélie penguin colonies and seeking out marine mammals. Equipped with two onboard helicopters, Ultramarine offers unparalleled access to the continent, providing stunning views of the iceberg-choked wilderness from sea, air, and land.
