The cultural expedition cruise company became the first shipping line to sign onto the initiative in 2023 and recently made history again by being the first to supply the EU Mission with valuable data gathered aboard its vessels. This data is now accessible to scientists via the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet), a trusted source of marine environmental and human activity data.
EMODnet collects data from the entire marine environment, ranging from coastal areas to the deep sea, and now includes verified Citizen Science data from Swan Hellenic’s Cruising4Oceans initiative. This data, first collected by the company’s SH Vega and SH Diana expedition cruise ships around Svalbard in the Arctic last August, includes critical information on water temperature, salinity, and conductivity. Scientists have found the data invaluable, particularly for oceanographers and meteorologists working on weather forecasting models.
“EMODnet is enabling new open science perspectives, and its data are routinely used by world-leading climate and oceanographic institutes,” said Antonio Novellino, coordinator of EMODnet Physics. He added that data from remote areas is often scarce due to the difficulty and cost of scientific campaigns, making Swan Hellenic’s contribution crucial.
Swan Hellenic’s Citizen Science programs have been ongoing for years, including collaborations with NASA, Happywhale, Secchi Disk Study, and Stony Brook University. The company’s efforts will continue to grow in 2025, with new projects aimed at recording environmental DNA (eDNA) and documenting climate-driven biodiversity changes through georeferenced pictures taken by guests.
Swan Hellenic CEO Andrea Zito expressed pride in the company’s involvement. “We are honored to be helping this vital EU Mission develop the most appropriate methodology and will be delighted to share it with other operators,” he said.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_separator css=”.vc_custom_1610931995138{margin-bottom: 10px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1610931970624{margin-bottom: 10px !important;}”]Subscribe to LATTE Cruise’s free eNewsletter to keep up to date with everything in the luxury cruise space.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1579214156361{margin-bottom: 10px !important;}”]
