Huka Lodge reopens after major refurbishment

New Zealand’s iconic Huka Lodge, located along the tranquil Waikato River in Taupō, has reopened its doors following a NZ$25 million refurbishment overseen by Baillie Lodges. The upgrade aims to preserve the lodge’s century-long heritage while introducing modern features for a new generation of travellers. Often referred to as “the grande dame of luxury lodges,” Huka Lodge has long been a favourite among celebrities and royalty. The extensive enhancements ensure that the lodge continues to serve as a premier destination, according to James Baillie, Founder of Baillie Lodges.

“My wife and business partner Hayley and I first stayed at Huka Lodge in the early 2000s when we were considering plans for Southern Ocean Lodge… Huka Lodge became a benchmark and central point of reference for us both,” he said. Baillie further highlighted the significance of the project, describing it as a “full circle moment” to contribute to the lodge’s next century of excellence. The newly redesigned lodge offers a range of luxurious updates, including an expanded dining room and bar overlooking the river, as well as private lounges such as The Loft and Piper Room.Guests can also enjoy a new outdoor terrace with an open fire and sweeping views. A peaceful wellness garden, inspired by the traditional Kiwi ‘bach,’ features a gym, spa treatments, a sauna, and a unique ice contrast shower. General Manager Kerry Molloy expressed excitement about the changes. “The new designs offer more reason for guests to spend time enjoying these beautiful spaces,” she said.
