Wilderness has confirmed its next East African property, Wilderness Mara, will open in the Maasai Mara in June 2026, a transformation of Little Governors’ Camp.
Situated at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment, the camp will offer prime access to the iconic Mara Triangle and both sides of the Mara River. The strategic setting allows for more exclusive and diverse game-viewing opportunities with fewer crowds.
“Formerly the legendary Little Governors’ Camp, the completely rebuilt Wilderness Mara carries forward a legacy of pioneering safari,” said Hein Prinsloo, Wilderness Kenya Chief Executive Officer.
“For over 50 years, Governors’ set the standard for authenticity, conservation and community. Now, Wilderness is proud to honour and evolve that heritage – blending classic East African charm with elevated, low-impact luxury.”
The camp will feature 12 tented suites, each positioned alongside a seasonal marsh to offer immersive nature experiences. With freestanding bathtubs, outdoor showers and elevated private decks, all suites are designed to draw guests closer to the surrounding wilderness.
The camp is crafted specifically for couples and solo travellers seeking solitude and connection to nature, with no family units onsite.
Amenities will include a spa, gym and in-camp photographic studio that allows guests to “relive and retell the day’s wildest moments.” Daily game drives will be complemented by hot air balloon safaris provided by Governors’ Balloon Safaris and cultural visits to local Maasai manyattas.
According to Wilderness, the Mara Triangle, managed by the Mara Conservancy, stands out for its successful conservation efforts, with significantly fewer lodges, strict anti-poaching protocols and sustainably managed tourism.
It also offers some of the continent’s most exclusive wildlife encounters, from black rhinos to dramatic river crossings during the Great Migration.
In February 2026, Wilderness will also debut Wilderness Mara Villas, an exclusive-use property on a secluded bend of the Mara River.
