HX Expeditions has completed a multimillion-euro refurbishment of its vessel, MS Spitsbergen, which aims to enhance comfort, accessibility and operational efficiency. Part of a €7 million investment across MS Spitsbergen and sister ship MS Fram, the transformation includes enhanced guest areas, a new bistro concept, a state-of-the-art science centre and a fresh exterior, now showcasing HX’s new indigo blue and sand livery. A standout feature of the refurbishment is the launch of Brygga Bistro on Deck 5, offering seasonal options like lamb kofta with homemade pita, wraps, toasties, and gourmet sandwiches. “By offering a seamless, high-quality alternative to traditional dining hours, Brygga enhances the onboard atmosphere—bringing comfort and accessibility to guests in a way that feels natural and refined,” said Stefan Engl, Vice President of Hotel Operations at HX.

Another highlight is the all-new Science Centre on Deck 6, positioned as the heart of the onboard guest experience. Equipped with interactive displays, workstations, a library, and flexible lecture space, it is designed to support citizen science and onboard education. “Last year alone, our program supported 32 research projects, 1,911 guest-scientist cruise nights, and more than 30,000 citizen science submissions,” noted Dr. Verena Meraldi, HX’s Chief Scientist. “The new Science Centre aboard Spitsbergen will allow us to deepen that impact -especially around Svalbard, one of the most climate-sensitive and scientifically significant areas in the world.”Additional upgrades include a refreshed Explorer Lounge & Bar, updated ADA-compliant facilities, improved crew accommodations, and a new Signature Cocktail Range served in the Explorer Bar. The 220-guest vessel will resume operations for the Arctic summer season in and around Svalbard before transitioning to Norway in winter. Beginning January, MS Spitsbergen will offer HX’s new seven-day Ultimate Norway – Arctic Expedition, a Northern Lights journey designed around the concept of friluftsliv – the Norwegian philosophy of embracing the outdoors. Guests can expect immersive experiences including kayaking, snowshoeing, whale watching, and community visits.
