Earlier this week, Relais & Châteaux admitted Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni in Bellagio, Italy into its collection. With that, the hotel became the first property in the portfolio to be located on Lake Como. Founded in 1873, Villa Serbelloni has been passed down through four generations of the Bucher family. Said Jan Bucher, General Manager of Villa Serbelloni: “Joining Relais & Châteaux is like receiving a sixth star—invisible to the eye, but unmistakable to those who seek soul, not just luxury.”

Being a Relais & Châteaux property, impressive dining is a given. There are two restaurants on property: the Michelin-recommended Mistral Restaurant and La Goletta Restaurant. The former has a seven-course tasting menu and a lakeside location, while the latter is a more casual eatery near the pool serving traditional Italian fare. The 94 rooms and suites are each individually designed and are decorated. In the rooms, guests can expect such touches as Murano glass chandeliers, 19th-century frescoes, embroidered linen, silks, antique furniture, Italian marble and gold leaf accents. For a room fit for a king, consider the Franz Liszt Imperial Suite, comprising four adjoining rooms and totalling 340 square meters. Guests can additionally expect a beach club and a spa.

The Location and History

The Bucher family
Located in Bellagio, where the two branches of Lake Como meet, Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a neoclassical retreat and one of the two oldest luxury hotels on Lake Como. Notable guests have included Winston Churchill, JFK, Franz Liszt, Mary Shelley, Sophia Loren, Mario Testino and Juergen Teller. Pretty cool: Listz’s piano is still located in the hotel and Teller’s latest photography exhibition was shot entirely on location at the villa. Pretty cool: The Bucher family still lives on site, making it feel as if guests are being welcomed into their home. The hotel is open from March 21 to November 9, 2025.
