Add one more travel segment that Forbes Travel Guide (“FTG”) is now affording its star rating: river cruises. What first began as an independent, global rating system for luxury hotels, FTG over the years expanded its areas of coverage—to ocean-bound cruise ships, air travel services like airlines and airports, cruise ship restaurants, hotel bars and “high-octane adventure” experiences.
FTG will announce its inaugural river cruise ratings in 2027, which it adds would mark an “industry first” for the travel segment.

refined onboard experiences that appeal to today’s discerning traveller. As demand grows for slower-paced luxury, FTG is proud to bring our trusted ratings to this flourishing segment.”
Who Will Be Eligible?
FTG’s inaugural river cruise ratings will honour cruises on the Danube, Rhine, Nile and Mekong rivers. AmaWaterways, Aqua Expeditions, Avalon Waterways, Riverside Luxury Cruises, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours/Emerald Cruises, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Viking River Cruises are all among the brands that may be included in the inaugural rating system.
Each year, FTG awards more than 2,000 properties with Five-Star, Four-Star and Recommended accolades. Every Star Rating is earned through in-person, incognito inspections based on hundreds of objective standards “with an emphasis on exceptional service.” Ratings are not for sale, and no fees, commissions or business relationships are required to earn them.
