The Western Australian Government has approved a $110 million floating wharf at the Port of Broome, to be constructed by Kimberley Marine Support Base Pty Ltd (KMSB).
The floating wharf will make it easier for small and large cruise ships to utilise the port as it resolves access issues created by Broome’s high tidal range and limited berthing structure.
Coupled with the recent completion of the Port of Broome channel optimisation project, the floating wharf will allow cruise ships to dock in Broome any time of the day, all year round.
A dredging program completed in September 2019 removed a rock mass that was a navigational hazard and had made access difficult, forcing ships to berth at irregular hours.
Tourism WA Managing Director, Brodie Carr, said the port projects would be a game changer for Broome’s tourism industry.
“We’re really optimistic about creating opportunities to grow the port and promote Broome’s new cruising potential that’s been unlocked through these improvements,” Carr said.
“It will open up exciting opportunities to market Broome as a ‘touch point’ destination for South-East Asian cruising holidays, which could combine Broome and Kimberley coastal cruising.”
KMSB aims to have the new facility operational in early 2022.Want to be in the luxury travel know? Subscribe to our free eNewsletter here to keep up to date with everything in the luxury travel industry.
